Preparation is critical to achieving success on the bar exam, and it requires a significant amount of time dedicated to studying. Yet discovering and maintaining the proper motivation to fuel you through this process is perhaps the most difficult part. The more motivated you are, the easier it'll be to do the work necessary to ensure you pass.
Here are six ways to help find, and sustain, that all-important motivation:
1. Think of Your End Goal
One of the most powerful sources of motivation can be to focus on a clearly defined goal. Whether it's long-term, such as passing the bar exam, or short-term, like conquering a specific section of the test, setting a goal and consistently reminding yourself of it while studying for the bar exam will help keep you motivated and moving forward.
2. Reward Yourself
Give yourself a reward, whether it's a sweet treat following a few hours of intense studying, or hanging out with friends after a full week. Knowing there is a reward at the end of your hard work will motivate you to continue.
3. Use Music
Just as music can power you through a tough workout, so too can it motivate you to study. Listening to the right playlist can give you the energy, inspiration, and motivation required to buckle down and study. Create a playlist of your favorite songs that always get you moving, but be sure to stay away from those "chill-out" tunes that put you to sleep.
4. Just Do It
It's easy to procrastinate. The hardest part of studying is starting. It may sound like an over-simplification, but to overcome this obstacle, "Just do it." No matter how many other things you'd rather be doing, no matter how tired you are, or how uninterested, just break out your books and dive in. Once you clear that initial hurdle, it's off to the races.
5. Break It Up
Knowing there is an end in sight can be a great motivator. Create a bar study schedule to guide you through the weeks and months leading up to the test so you know exactly what you'll be doing each day. This can also minimize your procrastination by establishing studying as a pre-planned part of your everyday life.
6. Stay Positive
It's very easy to get overwhelmed and want to give up. Stay positive and remind yourself of that intial goal you created at the very beginning of this process: passing the bar exam. Think about all the hard work and time you've already put in. You can do it!
