How to Prepare for the MPRE

How to Prepare for the MPRE

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, commonly known as the MPRE, is an exam with 60 multiple-choice questions that almost every state requires bar exam candidates to complete for their admission to the bar (see if your state requires it here). The MPRE tests future lawyers on their knowledge of the law governing the conduct of lawyers.

One major misconception about the MPRE is that it is easy. If you fail to put in the proper amount of time and effort into your MPRE preparation, there’s a good chance you will find the exam quite difficult.

Since retaking the MPRE is the last thing you want to do, here are some tips to ensure that you will pass with flying colors!

1. Pay Attention in Your Professional Responsibility Class

Most students are introduced to material that will be on the MPRE through their law school's Professional Responsibility Class. Be sure to pay close attention in this class so that you have a solid foundation.

2. Study, study, study!

Put aside enough time long before the MPRE so you can study and review the material that will be on it. Simply put: If you do not review the information that will be on the exam, you will not pass! You can see a complete outline of the MPRE subject matter here.

3. Take an Online MPRE Practice Exam

You can purchase the MPRE Online Practice Exam 1 (MPRE-OPE 1), which is a 60-question online practice exam that uses questions from previous MPREs. This practice exam offers notes that explain why each answer choice is correct (or not). You can purchase the MPRE-OPE here.

4. Sample Test Questions

Do as many MPRE sample test questions as you can so you can becomevery familiar with the language used on the exam. Look for questions that come with explanatory answers to help you understand why you might be getting them wrong.  The NCBE has provided sample MPRE test questions here.

5. Take a Free MPRE Course

Pieper Bar Review offers a free MPRE course that will set you up for success on exam day. This free course gives you access to comprehensive lectures and course materials that cover both the ABA’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Judicial Conduct, as well as essential ethical principles from the leading constitutional, federal, and state cases, and procedural and ethical rules tested on the MPRE in detail. Pieper will provide you with everything you need to walk into the MPRE with confidence that you'll pass.
